“Golf has given me so much joy, fresh air, excitement & friendships - it really is one of the best sports for socialising & wellbeing”

From the Closet to the Course: My Journey with GIGS

Growing up gay and in the closet often felt suffocating. My social environment was limited, and I found it hard to truly connect with others who understood me. It was a lonely feeling, and I longed for a place where I could be myself. That’s when I decided to start Girls in Golf Society (GIGS)—a space where like-minded women could come together, share a love for golf, and build a supportive community.

At first, it was just an idea. I wanted to meet new women golfers, but I didn’t know where to start. Then, through the magic of the internet, I connected with a fellow gay golfer. With her help and shared vision, GIGS was born, and from there, a whole new world opened up.

I can honestly say I’ve never looked back. Through GIGS, I’ve met some of the most wonderful women, many of whom have become my closest friends. It’s hard to express how much that sense of connection and belonging has meant to me—not just as a golfer, but as someone who finally felt seen, accepted, and understood.

Golf has always been the sport I love, but GIGS turned it into so much more than just a game—it became a community, and for that, I am forever grateful.

“Golf is a sport for life and I intend playing as long as I am able.”
